ChatGPT ads have launched in South Africa
ChatGPT ads went live in South Africa in October 2026. Here is how they work, who sees them, the restrictions to know, and what the new channel means for your business.
South Africa just got a brand-new advertising channel. In late October 2026, OpenAI switched on ads inside ChatGPT for South Africa, part of an expansion to 26 more countries. For the first time, your business can show up right when someone asks ChatGPT what to buy, where to go, or who to hire.
Here is what launched, how it works, and what it means for your business.
What are ChatGPT ads?
They are sponsored results that appear inside a ChatGPT conversation. The ad sits underneath the answer, clearly labelled as sponsored and kept visually separate from it.
OpenAI says the ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, and that advertisers "do not have access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details" (reported by MyBroadband).
Which ad shows is based on the conversation itself. So the targeting is intent. Someone is actively asking about a problem you solve.
You do not bid on keywords
This is not Google. There are no keywords to choose or bid on.
ChatGPT reads the context of the conversation and matches ads to it. So your ad shows when someone is already asking about the kind of thing you offer. That is about as warm as intent gets.
How fast did this happen?
The timeline moved quickly:
- OpenAI started testing ads in the United States in February 2026.
- By late August 2026, ChatGPT ads were reportedly at a 1 billion dollar annualised revenue run rate, less than 200 days after testing began.
- On 21 October 2026, ads went live in South Africa as part of a 26-country expansion.
In other words, this is very new. That is exactly where the opportunity sits.
Who actually sees the ads?
Ads show to people on ChatGPT's free and Go plans. The paid tiers, Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education, stay ad-free.
OpenAI also keeps ads away from accounts identified as under 18.
How much do they cost?
There is no fixed price, and no minimum spend to start.
Early reports point to a few dollars per click, and budgets are averaged over about a week, so daily spend can flex up and down. There is no official South African cost data yet. So the honest answer is to set a small test budget and watch the real numbers.
The restrictions you need to know
This is where it gets important, and where a lot of businesses will hit a wall.
Outside the United States, OpenAI's policies say "ads for health services and financial services outside the US are generally prohibited" (iLEAD et al, who tested the platform on launch day).
From that early testing, these are prohibited in South Africa for now:
- Medical consultations and clinical services
- Health insurance and medical schemes
- Personal loans, payments and remittances
- Credit repair and debt settlement
Others are restricted to approved advertisers only, with extra approval needed: deposit accounts, funeral and life insurance, credit cards, mortgages, investments and general insurance.
OpenAI also looks at your whole business, not just the product you want to advertise. As their guidance puts it, "a registered or licensed business is not automatically eligible for every advertising category or market."
And eligibility is still moving. OpenAI has updated these policies several times since March 2026, so expect changes.
Can South African businesses run them yet?
Yes, with a caveat. On launch day the picture was a little blurry. One report said the self-serve tools were not yet available to local businesses, while an agency testing it the same week was already setting up South African accounts. That is normal for a launch this fresh.
A few practical things from that early testing:
- Each advertiser needs its own account. There is no agency manager structure like Google Ads has, yet.
- Billing is by credit card only for now, with no invoiced or consolidated billing.
- Business verification can take up to seven business days.
What it means for your business
A genuinely new ad channel does not come along often. When it does, the early movers win.
Right now competition is low and attention is cheap, because most businesses do not even know this exists yet. That will not last.
The smart play is not to bet the farm. It is to get in early, start small, and measure hard while the channel is still wide open. South African benchmarks do not exist yet, so treat the first weeks as a real test, not a guarantee.
That is exactly how we are approaching it. We help service businesses get set up on ChatGPT ads, built on the same discipline we bring to Google Ads and paid social. If you want to be early, tell us what you are working on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can South African businesses advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes. Ads went live in South Africa on 21 October 2026, and businesses can set up self-serve accounts through OpenAI's ad tools. It is brand new, so expect the process and the policies to keep evolving.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
People on ChatGPT's free and Go plans. Paid tiers like Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education do not see ads. OpenAI also excludes accounts identified as under 18.
What can you not advertise on ChatGPT in South Africa?
Health services and most financial services are heavily restricted or prohibited outside the United States. Medical services, health insurance, personal loans and payments are not currently permitted, and categories like life insurance, credit cards and investments need special approval. OpenAI reviews your whole business, not just the product.
