ChatGPT ads restrictions in South Africa

Not every business can advertise on ChatGPT. Here are the categories that are restricted or banned in South Africa, and how to check if you qualify.

ChatGPT ads went live in South Africa in October 2026. Exciting, but there is a catch. Not every business can advertise, and some categories are blocked outright.

Before you plan a campaign, it pays to know where you stand. Here is what is restricted in South Africa, based on the platform's early rollout.

Health and finance are the big ones

The heaviest restrictions fall on healthcare and financial services.

OpenAI's ad policies state that "ads for health services and financial services outside the US are generally prohibited" (iLEAD et al, who tested the platform on launch day). South Africa sits outside the US, so that applies here.

What is prohibited right now

From that early testing, these cannot advertise on ChatGPT in South Africa:

  • Medical consultations and clinical services
  • Health insurance and medical schemes
  • Personal loans
  • Payments and remittances
  • Credit repair and debt settlement

What needs special approval

Other categories are restricted to selected advertisers only. You can apply, but you need extra approval first:

  • Deposit accounts
  • Funeral and life insurance
  • Credit cards
  • Mortgages
  • Investments
  • General insurance

Who else gets filtered out

It is not only about your industry. OpenAI also controls who sees ads.

Ads do not show to accounts identified as under 18. They are also kept away from sensitive topics. And they only reach people on the free and Go plans, since Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education stay ad-free.

It is your whole business, not just the product

This trips a lot of people up. OpenAI assesses your primary business and your whole website, not only the thing you want to advertise.

So a pharmacy promoting beauty products can still hit eligibility issues, because of the pharmacy side. As OpenAI's own guidance puts it, "a registered or licensed business is not automatically eligible for every advertising category or market."

Two more things worth knowing. An ad can pass review and still be blocked from serving in the countries you choose. And these policies have changed several times since March 2026, so what is true today may shift.

What to do if your category is restricted

Do not assume you are out. Some paths need approval rather than a flat no, and the rules are still moving.

The sensible first step is to check your eligibility before you spend anything. That is part of how we work. We confirm whether ChatGPT ads are actually open to your business before we build a thing. See our ChatGPT ads service, or read our full breakdown of the launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my industry advertise on ChatGPT in South Africa?

Most can, but health services and most financial services are heavily restricted or prohibited outside the US. Some categories, like life insurance, credit cards and investments, need special approval. The safest move is to check eligibility before planning a campaign.

Why would a ChatGPT ad get rejected?

Common reasons are a restricted category, an ineligible primary business, or a creative that breaks the ad policies. OpenAI reviews your business, your domain, your industry and each ad separately, so a rejection can come from any one of them.

Can financial or health businesses advertise at all?

Some can, with approval, and the list keeps changing. Outside the US, health services and most financial services are generally prohibited, but certain finance categories are open to approved advertisers. Check your specific category before assuming either way.
