ChatGPT ads vs Google ads, compared

ChatGPT ads and Google ads both put you in front of buyers, but they work very differently. Here is how they compare, and when to use each.

Two ways to buy attention from people who are actively looking. ChatGPT ads and Google ads both do that. But they are not the same, and choosing one over the other is usually the wrong question.

Here is an honest comparison, and when each one makes sense.

How they work

Google ads run on keywords. You bid on the terms people type into search, and your ad shows against those searches.

ChatGPT ads have no keywords. The ad is matched to the context of a conversation, so it appears when someone is already asking ChatGPT about the kind of thing you offer. The targeting is intent, read from the chat, not a keyword you picked.

Where ChatGPT ads win

Being early. The channel is new, so competition is low and attention is cheaper than it will be once everyone piles in. If you want to plant a flag before your competitors, this is the moment.

And the intent is strong. Someone asking ChatGPT what to buy is a warm lead, caught at the deciding moment.

Where Google ads win

Proof and control. Google ads are mature, measurable and predictable. You know what a click costs, you can forecast, and you can scale what works.

ChatGPT ads have none of that track record in South Africa yet. The benchmarks simply do not exist.

So which should you use?

Both, in the right order.

Google ads are the dependable engine. They should carry the load. ChatGPT ads are the early bet. Run them as a small, separate test funded from a slice of your budget, not a replacement for what already works.

Do not move your Google budget across. Add a controlled ChatGPT test on top, measure it hard, and scale only if the numbers earn it.

We run both. See our Google Ads service and our ChatGPT Ads service, or read our breakdown of the ChatGPT ads launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I move my Google Ads budget to ChatGPT ads?

No. Google ads are proven and ChatGPT ads are a brand-new, unproven channel in South Africa. Keep Google carrying the load and add a small, separate ChatGPT test funded from a slice of your budget.

Are ChatGPT ads cheaper than Google ads?

Possibly, for now, because competition is low while the channel is new. Early reports point to a few dollars per click, but there is no reliable South African cost data yet, so treat any number as a starting estimate.

Can I run both at the same time?

Yes, and that is usually the smart play. Let Google drive dependable leads while a controlled ChatGPT test explores a new channel. Measure each separately so you know what is actually working.
